The stream of life

Life is like a powerful stream that flows calmly along.

But we are like a crowd of mice in it, struggling fiercely against the current.

All our selfish striving is in vain. The stream is much stronger than us.

Therefore, he advises us to let him lead.

After all, he knows the destination much better.

So let’s turn around and enjoy the ride.

With new-found serenity, we now contemplate the landscapes through which the river takes us.

Oh, what beauty has remained hidden from us until now in the splashing of our misguided efforts.

Endure your neighbors

To endure our neighbors and to respond with love to the pain they inflict on us is one of the most important spiritual exercises of our daily lives.

When we respond to an irritation with attack, we have missed an opportunity for growth. But when we respond with love, not only do we grow ourselves, but in doing so we break a vicious cycle of attack and counterattack that can send its ripples around the entire planet.

Often, we wish for a hermitage where we can meditate or pray undisturbed by other people. But what good is all the meditation or prayer if we replace the bliss we received there with anger at the slightest irritation?

Doesn’t our true strength show itself when we keep our cool in unfavorable conditions?

For what does the warrior train if not for war?

The beauty of the moment

A beautiful moment

The beauty of the moment is breathtaking.
The sight of it leads to a heart full of happiness and bliss.

Too often we seek happiness in the possibilities of the future.
Or we look for it in the memories of the past.
But it is not to be found here.
Here we find only our conception of it.
A faint reflection of reality.

Instead, stop and open your senses with all your might.
Look at the very moment with new eyes.
And even the familiar will unfold a new beauty,
that will still your thirst for happiness eternally.

The Tiger Within

There is something in us that behaves like a tiger. Whenever he sees something that attracts him, he wants to chase and grab it.

Tame this tiger and the fog in your mind will clear. Where once was a storm, the sun of peaceful happiness will shine.

Make me an instrument of thy peace

Saint Francis by Peter Paul Rubens

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace
that I may love where people hate
that I may forgive where there is offense
that I may unite where there is conflict
that I may speak truth where there is confusion
that I bring faith where there is doubt
that I awaken hope where despair torments
that I may bring light where darkness reigns
that I may bring joy where sorrow dwells.

Lord, let me seek
not that I may be comforted, but that I may comfort
not that I may be understood, but that I may understand
not that I may be loved, but that I may love.

For he who gives himself receives
he who forgets himself finds
he who forgives is forgiven
and he who dies awakens to eternal life.

  • St. Francis (?)

The prayer is usually attributed to St. Francis. However, the authorship is disputed. Even if Francis should not be the author, I am sure that he would have enjoyed it.
